Back in the daily grind from a sick ass poker weekend in Biloxi. We had a blast with 8 of us sharing a condo we called the GCP Den. It was soooo cool. You guys can see pics on the site. We had laptops and monitors all over the condo. We also did pretty good with the results also. I got first place in the first tournament I played in and "whiffed" the rest...not even a cash. Tex also won a tournament and Bill cashed 3 times.
We had alot of fun though. I can;t say enough about George, Diane and Betty at Gulf Coast Resort Rentals. They really set us up in a nice condo and worked with us on the payment...which was cash of course.
Wild Bill is trying to log in 50 hours of cash play at the IP as they are having a freeroll on Sept 9th or 10th for anyone with over 50 hours of cash game play...he is going to be putting in some sick hours in the next week. I think that this will be tough to get, but he is going to give it hell.
Personally, like I mentioned in earlier post, I got first place in the first tournament I played. I played several tournaments at the Beau, numerous single table satellites and hours and hours of cash play of the 1-2 and 2-5 nl from Wednesday to Monday night at 5:00pm. I crossed the state line back into Louisiana with the exact same amount of money I crossed into Mississippi with. The trip was a wash financially, but it was a big win for me as far as experience goes. Met some cool people, played tons of poker and had a great time...you can't put a price on that much fun.
One of the best times was Bill, Tex and me on the patio of the condo about 4:00am smoking cigars and just shooting the shit...telling poker war stories...and being drunk and silly. Man that was great. 3 "regular joes" with dreams of poker granduer...sitting under the stars and dreaming about the way it ought to be...or how it will be one day...it doesn't get any better than that.

Gene, I've been reading your blog for a couple of weeks. Mostly catching up on some of your older posts so I haven't been posting. I just want to know what is your plan as far as your future in Poker? It sounds like poker is a hobby to you because you never take chances or try to win any events. Which is not bad if its a hobby.
I've been playing poker for about 5 years and I satelite into lots of tournaments. I have no big wins but I also don't see the point in working the clock and trying to break even in bottom money. Seems like you and wild bill are striving to become average poker players and not champions. I like your blog and I am not trying to insult you guys in any way. I'm just trying to get your views on what kind of glory you get out of chopping and breaking even when you have a shot to go for the GUSTO!

what up GeneD? sounds like nobody in your crew hit it big but sounds like you'll had a good time.
As you know i was going to drive over to the Beau and hopefully try to win a tourny or two but i could not get captainstacks to go with me. The old man has been kinda depreesed lately and he said that he did not think it would be a good idea to gamble during his depressing.
So, me being from Jasper, Texas and being an alum of North Texas I drove over to Oklahoma to spend the weekend at the Captain's Shack,(lol, the fucker has a huge ass pad) and we went to the oklahoma and North Texas football game Saturday. The Captain is a booster member for the Sooner Atlhletic program so we was able to get some great seats. Unfortunally for me his Sooners beat my Mean Greenies 79-10, but we had a great time. It was nice to do something besides work and play poker all the time, it was a great change of pace. The captains is no doubt living like a king. Huge house, 8 acres of land, underground pool, and i am not even going to start to name all of his toys that he owns. But i tell you one thing I doubt he ever lets me ride his Harley again,lol my bad Captain.
I see we have a new blooger in bigslick1982? welcome to GeneD's blog. Don't forget to check out his other site Gulfcoastpoker.net. Him and his boys have it going on. Gene always seems to take some slack from wanting to chop but i read he took down a tourney last Wedensday in Mississippi? Was that your first big win? I bet it felt great to take it down and not chop two to three ways. I think Gene wants to go big time Bigslick but at the same time I think he is just trying to build his bankroll the best way he knows how. I myself and not big on chops. It is win or go home, but that is just me. But i will let my man GeneD answer your post himself.
Gene how did the opening of Gulfcoastpoker.net go this past weekend? did you save me a hat? i would be happy to wear it and try and get you some exposure when I am playing, hollar back
Welcome to my Blog bigslick1982. If after reading my blog and all my previous post you seem to think I never take any chances and don't try to win every tournament I play in, then I can only say... "Good Read" brother. I always play in tournaments that I plan on not winning...this includes numerous WSOP/WPT events. I go into these events "Hoping" and "Praying" to chop or lose. When I got 3rd place this past WSOP trip to Vegas, that was what I was hoping for..."I just hope I can get 3rd place...screw 1st place".
To revisit several post back...I make decisions based on my bankroll. I try to make the most logical, rational decision for that situation based off my bankroll. If you think buying into a $100.00 buy-in tournament and chopping 4 ways for $550.00 is not a good decision, then I don't know what to tell you. I would suggest you read "Zen and the Art of Poker" which breaks it down to the least commom denominator...your decision at that one point in time. I would also suggest you google "Bankroll Management" and read some of the articles. May help you break out that slump your in and actually cash in a big tournament.

I think we started off on the wrong foot. I am not saying anything bad about the way you choose to build your roll. Thats your business. I was simply trying to pick your brain and see how you go about being so conservative with your game.
I am not in a slump at all my friend. I actually have cashed many times in both major and smaller events, but,"I have no big wins." So you must have not read my post right.
When I make a final table I usually know if im the best player at the table which is usually every time I step on the felt. So therefore Im confident about my game. That allows me to play the tournament out and if I don't get unlucky I usually take down the crown. I've won numerous smaller events $25,$50,$100 etc. just not the big ones.
Again I love your blog and I wish I had the same job you have that gives you all that time to play poker. I admire that. Goodluck GeneD in future tournaments.
I apologize for the sarcasm bigslick. I guess I got my feelings hurt when people question my desire/passion to be a champion. This is all I live for. Question my play at the tables...call me a donkfish idiot...anything... but don't question my passion ;-)

I don't mind chopping. Most times preference would be to split it more equitably and play for the rest. Usually that doesn't work out. I've had my fair share of bad luck in non-chopping situations, such as when I had a guy 8 to 1 in chips at the beau and kept getting my money in good only to have him suck out on the river. I refused a chop of any sort and left with nothing. Would I do it again, of course, 8 to 1 and a guy that I thought I could outplay all day, why give up any of first place money?
One factor people seem to forget is that many of these tournaments have many of the same faces. Sometimes, as I did on Sunday, I think it's more profitable to take a chop rather than to play 1 on 14 that day and in the future. I know several players that have told me they softplayed everybody but the guy who didn't want to chop until they busted him.
I've gotten very charitable chops in the past with a tiny stack. So I think I make the right decisions as I'm sure Gene does too. As for striving to be an average poker player, I'll take the bait, sometimes I can't afford to go for the gusto and pass up the guaranteed money. Course that's a bit like I play poker, sometimes my improbable draw is just slightly priced out in a multi-way pot even if the payout is ridiculous, but you'll rarely see me recklessly throw in the money. I can play blackjack if I want to do that.
Also, I don't think any of us plays to break even.
