Way to go Clint!!!

Looks like Clint Shafer gave them hell yesterday at the final table. I have been playing with Clint for several years now, and he is really a great guy...and a solid player. I don't think he is any better than any of the guys in our crew, but it was just his time to shine...and catch the cards. Congrats Clint!!!!

Ruttely missed the money by a couple of places. He had just doubled up through P Gordon when the following hand came up 10 minutes later...

Per K Minton's blog
--Seat 6 raised to 8,500. Brandon Ruttley called, Lou Esposito called, and Phil Gordon (button) called. Flop was 2 4 9 . Seat 6 checked, Brandon bet 30K, Lou folded, and Phil moved all-in. Seat 6 mucked and Brandon went into the tank. After a few minutes (the level had ended) Phil called for the clock. Before they got the clock started, Brandon called and showed pocket Jacks. Phil held pocket 4s for the set. Last two cards were Q 8 and Brandon was busted in 39th place. Phil adds more chips to the mountain--

I was actually there sweating Rut when this hand hit. I had Davey on the phone giving "Play by Play" and I actually thought Gordan was on a steal and he was "putting the screws" to Rut.
Reasoning being, he knew Rut was not a regular on the circuit, Rut had some chips left (about $36k) and it was a few minutes before a break. On top of that, they were on the money bubble and he thought that Rut would not risk not cashing, and if Rut called and Gordon lost the pot, it would not have hurt Gordon in the least...He had a monster stack...you had to be there to see the situation.

Yea...I call here also...and I would have taken it a lot harder than Rut. At that point, with all the downward variance I have been experiencing lately, I would have been convinced that God hates me.

yes i want to congratulate clint on his second place winnings also, he had a 6 to 1 chip lead at one time and he should have won the damn thing, I have played with clint a few times in Baton Rouge and although he is a swell kid, he is at best an average poker player.

Gene as far as your friend ruttley that you were sweating at the main event, he needs to lay that down. To close to a cash, to be taking dumb chances against a pro like Phil Gordan. Word to the wise, get into the money and then try and make a move, and if you get busted at least you cashed, now this kid you were sweating played his heart out and has nothing to show for it.

Like C.S. stated good luck in Vegas. Hopefully you don't look down at "rockets" and get your ass smoked by some rags like 10-3 offsuit.

well i will post later on, i am headed down to the IP for the third day in a row. Took third last night in a tourney for a $675 cash and also "chopped the white meat" in anothor tourny with my buddy Fat Louie.. Peace out

WTF is the "whitemeat" ? Is Fat Louie the same Louie that won the main event? Cause Esposito was at my table in the $1500 and he looks like tons of fun. The kid has only been playing a couple of years. He got very lucky at my table and evidently the main event as well.

I love the monday morning quarterbacks. As if Phil Gordon always has the nuts because he is a pro. You play to win and have to go with your gut. Sounds like Ruttley just got unlucky there. Kudos to him for having a sac and not playing scared so he can get a stat for PokerPages.

I think Ruttley should have reraised preflop. Gordon either lays down his fours and Ruttley takes down the pot (after the flop against the others) OR Gordon calls. If Gordon calls, Ruttley is forced to give him credit for a bigger hand (even if he knows he might be calling with anything because of his stacksize--he still has to consider Phil has a big hand). Then postflop when Ruttley raises and Phil goes all in he can let go of those jacks much easier.

As for sitting on a hand like Js because he's close to the money that's defeatist and setting yourself up to fail. He had enough chips to reraise that hand and to raise postflop. He needed to find out what he was against preflop. His merely calling also starts creating pot odds if somebody near him has a decent hand. Last thing you want with Jacks is having multiple people in the pot, unless you are playing them like 4s and hoping for a set.

Reraise with those jacks--if you can't do that you should just fold them.

what a bunch of worms, every one of you are average players at best. One question for you Mr. D (that's you Gene) i have read on numerous blogs that you have written that you THINK someone in the CREW will hit it big. First of all who is this great group of players you call the crew? And second how do YOU plan on hitting it big, when you posted in your last blog that you didn't even play the last MEGA satelitte to get into the main event. You can not hit it big if you don't get in the big dance? If you think cashing in the $500 chip or selling hit is hitting it big then you are wasting your time.

Hold on there fellas, we don't need to make fun on here. I am also from Houma and i don't think the comments or needed. If scotty T. is the same guy i think he is you'll need to leave him alone. He is a very nice guy he just has some funny little ways, but calling the man a retard is un called for. By the way Scotty has played in some WSOP circuit events and done pretty damn well if it is the same guy i think it is.

Played JJs aggressively this weekend. Had better position than Rutley though. The guy, two off from the button makes a larger than standard raise probably trying to steal my position (button) and/or buy the pot from the two tight blinds to my left.

I look down at Jacks. Unfortunately per Lederer's theory of leverage, our chip stacks dictate I make the play that I didn't. Really was supposed to ship it and make him decide to call for all his chips or not.

Instead, like the donkey I am, I three x his raise. This gives him one more choice, fold, call, or ship it. He ships it, of course, because now he's got the outside chance of me folding. Except he didn't have enough left even if I was making a play, to make me fold. If I were him I probably would have let my raise go because going all in had so little fold equity and he was actually pretty weak in the face of a reraise...

I fault him a little bit for playing his hand the way he did, but I've seen this kid at multiple final tables in the IP Classic so he's doing something right. My poor play plus his slight misstep means I have to call. Even though I was 99% sure I was shipping it, I asked him if he had queens, essentially letting him know I had Js, and from his mini-reaction I could tell he was in a little bit of trouble. Oh well, at least I wasn't against Ks, As or Qs. I make the call praying for 10s. He turns over KQ o/s--not what I wanted to see.

Obviously, a Queen hit but that's irrelevant. Here I still contend being aggressive with the Jacks is the way to go. Turns out both blinds had Aces and the small laid down AK in the face of my reraise--they thanked me for saving them money. You're welcome Mr. and Mrs. Assclown.

If I had As it might be a good strategy but with Jacks, my play should have been to put all his chips at risk. Instead I put some of them to the test and let him dumbly semi-bluff the rest.

Why reraise with KQ o/s you ask? He apologized to me, though I fault myself because I led him into that corner and he said he thought I was making a move. If I had looked at the chip stacks more carefully, I should have shipped him, thus even if he thinks I'm making a move he might have to lay down. Hard to call all your chips with KQ o/s most of my likely hands have that crippled.

What's this got to do with anything? I actually thought about Ruttley's hand here during the action, and stupidly put my reraise to see where I stood, problem was chip stacks didn't allow for a reraise of anything but everything. Unlike Ruttley, a reraise wouldn't tell me anything it just forced a dangerous hand into pushing.

Wanted to see what you experts think of my analysis do you guys agree with my conclusion or have any other suggestions on how I could have played it?

I realize it was a donkey move so we got that covered already...

I play jacks differently every time it seems. I can see playing them the way you did. What i try my best to do is see through my opponents hole cards like the Matador on that cheesy espn series Tilt. It seldom works for me. I fell in between 2 morons in Tunica late in a tournament with pocket JJ on the button. Women in cuttoff raises, i reraise ,bb goes all in for about 70% of my stack. Women goes all in and just has me covered. Im like fuck and i fold . BB turns over 44 and bitch shows 99. Ignorance is bliss! Even a J hits the board.

The Matador would have made the right play there.

bubble boy said...

there is only one correct way to play pocket jacks. We u look down on pocket Jacks, throw them in the muck. Wait for a better hand like Q-9 offsuit. I know a guy who makes a killing playing that hand.
